This Sunday, June 25th we will welcome Reverend Derek Porter, his wife Jennifer and their sons, Travis, Tristan, Shane and Brendan to the family at Smyrna First UMC.
Derek most recently served 7 years at Villa Rica UMC and he has been serving the UMC since 2000. Following his graduation from Lagrange College he completed his Masters of Divinity at Emory’s Candler School of Theology in 2005. Pastor Derek is a 3rd generation Methodist pastor preceded by his father and grandfather who served as pastors in Georgia. While he grew up in several small towns across South Georgia the Columbus area is his “official” hometown and where his mother and brothers still reside. Derek brings SFUMC a wonderful legacy of serving God and the United Methodist Church. His Christian spirit is contagious and he is excited to accept the mission God led him to here at SFUMC.
To connect with the congregation during the summer months the Staff-Parish Relations Committee is going to sponsor a series of Town Hall meetings in coordination with the Facilities Planning Team and the Finance Committee. These meetings will begin on Wednesday, June 28 at 6:30 PM in the Fellowship Hall. Additional meetings are scheduled for:
- Sunday, July 9th at 1PM – Room A-107
- Sunday, July 23rd at 1PM – Fellowship Hall
- Sunday, August 6th at 1PM – Fellowship Hall
- Sunday, August 20th at 1PM – Fellowship Hall
These meetings will provide Reverend Derek an opportunity to meet and connect with the congregation and provide communication from the Facility Planning committee and the Finance Committee.
We prayerfully welcome Reverend Derek and his family as they join the family here at Smyrna First United Methodist and as they prepare to move into their new home.
There will be a reception in the Welcome Center after the 11AM service on June 25th to meet Reverend Derek and Jennifer.
