Smyrna First UMC Ghana Mission

This will be the fourth year of our mission in Manchester, Nicaragua. Manchester is a “barrio” on the outskirts of Managua that is built around an open sewer line that runs from the city and backs up to the infamous Managua city dump. In Manchester we have established an ongoing pre-school and a feeding program that feeds 150 children a day. For many it is the only meal they receive.

Our yearly trip to Manchester provides health evaluations and first aid, extensive clothing, 70 lb. food bags for families and bible school activities for the children. Our efforts have also led to a first time census of the barrio, a medical record keeping system, and government provided vaccination. For the first time we will have dental care available.

A major point of emphasis beginning this year is the Fix a Roof program. The people of Manchester live in dirt floor shanties made of cardboard, scrap wood and whatever the people can find. When it rains they become nothing more than mud huts. Through our fundraising we are going to be able to provide tin roofs for many of the shanties. If interested in donating to this part of the mission forms are in the church office. (July 5-July13, 2008)
